Making the Message Meaningful to Me

"Short Term Memory Loss - Working With the Word"
Isaiah 55:6-11; 1 John 3:16-20; James 1:19-27

Three Steps to The Study of God's Word - James 1:19-27

Initial Preparation - Four Directives

  1. Concentrate Your Attention: "(You) should be quick to listen..." v. 19
Most learning in James' time was done through listening, not reading.
  2. Control Your Tongue: "... (we're to be) slow to speak..." v. 19
"...men will give account...for every careless word..." Matt. 12:36
  3. Contain Your Anger: "...(we're to be) slow to become angry." v. 19
"...man's anger does not bring the righteous life God desires." v. 20
  4. Clean Up Your Lives: "...get rid of all moral filth and the evil..." v. 21
Sin is like having wax in our ears - we can't hear God's Word.

Insightful Examination

"Listen" can be translated "welcome"... actively welcome God's Word.
Come to the reading of God's Word with anticipation; excitement.
Reading God's Word is like reading a love letter.

Intentional Application

"Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and keep it." Luke 11:28
"Hearer" was used like "auditor" - are you just auditing God's Word?
Casual concern for the Word creates functionally illiterate Christians.
Are you an explorer or a tourist when you open God's Word?

Three Tests of Life Application

Self-Control - self control is tied to the reality of your religion. v. 26
Spiritual Compassion - treatment of others = done to Jesus. Mt. 25
Social Corruption - we walk a fine line between Christ and culture.
